As an artist who not only dreams in detail every single night but can also lucid dream, I often wonder if there is any meaning behind those dreams, and how dreams affect artists’ creations. Havelock Ellis, an English physician, once said “Dreaming is thus one of our roads into the infinite... It is only by emphasizing our finiteness that we ever become conscious of the infinite. The infinite can only be that which stretches far beyond the boundaries of our own personality. It is the charm of dreams that they introduce us into a new infinity.” With that being said, I have brought my “dream world” to life. I have constructed an alternative space with the elements I see the most in my dreams, and brought this space into VR as a looped 360 video. These elements can be something as simple as a paper, or as complicated as a landscape, the characteristic they all hold in common is they remind me I’m in a dream. With this project I have immersed myself with books, artworks, movies and all kinds of different things to see how that information collectively transforms into ideas in my dreams, then finally I bring my dreams into reality with modern technologies such as 3D scanning, Photoshop, Blender and VR. There are a lot of elements from different dreams of mine that would be included in this project, such as subway station, sand dunes and Japanese traditional architecture. In order to not forget what I dreamed about, I drew sketches or recorded voice memos of the inspirational or memorable moments right after waking up. Then during the creative process, I use the combination of 3D scanning, Blender and VR to construct immersive visuals.
